Jesus was staying in Bethany at the house of Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha. A dinner was given in Jesus’ honour. Martha served the food. – Slide 1
Lazarus ate at the table with Jesus and His disciples. – Slide 2
Mary however sat at Jesus’ feet. – Slide 3
She took about a pint (0.5 litres) of a very, very expensive perfume of pure nard ... – Slide 4
... and poured it on Jesus’ feet. – Slide 5
When Judas saw what Mary had done, he objected, ‘Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor?’ The perfume was very valuable and worth about a year’s wages. – Slide 6
Judas did not say this because he cared for the poor but because he was a thief. He looked after the money given to the poor and had been secretly helping himself to some of it. – Slide 7
‘Leave her alone,’ Jesus replied, ‘she has poured perfume on me in preparation for my burial. She has done a beautiful thing.’ – Slide 8
‘You will always have the poor among you,’ Jesus continued, ‘but you will not always have me.’ – Slide 9
‘Listen to this. Wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.’ – Slide 10
A large crowd was gathering outside wanting to see Jesus and Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead. – Slide 11
Judas left the house and headed off to find the Chief Priests. He had decided to betray Jesus. – Slide 12
