Slide 1

Wise Men (Magi) in the East saw a new and very bright star in the sky. To them it was the sign of a newborn king. They set off in the direction of the star to bring Him gifts. – Slide 1

Slide 2

They travelled at night following the star and rested during the day. – Slide 2

Slide 3

It was a long trip taking many weeks. – Slide 3

When the star led them to the land of Israel they headed for Jerusalem where Herod the Great was ruler. – Slide 4

Slide 5

The men (Magi), all important decision makers in their own land, went to Herod’s palace. – Slide 5

Slide 6

‘Where is the one who has been born King of the Jews?’ the men asked. We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.’ – Slide 6

Slide 7

Herod was alarmed to hear of a newborn king. (Historical note: Herod had previously been defeated in battles with the Parthian peoples from the East and he did not want them supporting a new king). – Slide 7

Slide 8

Herod called the chief priest and teachers of the law and asked where the Messiah was to be born. They got out the ancient scrolls of the prophets. – Slide 8

Slide 9

‘In Bethlehem in Judea,’ they replied, ‘The prophet Micah wrote: ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means the least among the rulers of Judah – Slide 9

Slide 10

Herod summoned the Wise Men in secret to find out exactly when the star had first appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem. ‘Go and search for the child,’ he ordered them. ‘As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too can go and worship him.’ – Slide 10

Slide 11

The Wise Men followed the star towards Bethlehem. – Slide 11

Slide 12

The star came to rest over the place where Joseph and Mary were staying. – Slide 12

Slide 13

On coming to the house they saw Mary and the baby Jesus and bowed down to worship Him. – Slide 13

Slide 14

They opened their treasures and gave him gifts of gold ... – Slide 14

Slide 17

God warned them in a dream not to go back to report to Herod for the jealous ruler was planning to kill baby Jesus. – Slide 17

Slide 18

So they went back on another route that did not go through Jerusalem. – Slide 18

Slide 19

An angel of the Lord then warned Joseph in a dream. ‘Get up, take the child and his mother to Egypt and stay there until I tell you to return. Herod is planning to kill baby Jesus.’ – Slide 19

Slide 20

Joseph got up at once and they set off towards Egypt and safety. (Many years before God had told the prophet Hosea that His son would be in Egypt and would be called back from that land). – Slide 20
