The birth of Jesus in Bethlehem.
Contributed by Didier Martin
1
Mary had been told by an angel that she had been chosen to give birth to God’s Son, Jesus.
When Mary was due to give birth, she and Joseph had to travel to Bethlehem to register their names with the Romans. They wanted to stay at an inn but the innkeeper had no room for them. – Slide 1

So, the innkeeper suggested they stay in the stable instead. – Slide 2

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born. Mary wrapped the baby boy in cloths and placed Him in a manger. – Slide 3

That night, some shepherds were in the fields nearby watching their sheep. – Slide 4

An angel of the Lord stood before them. The glory of the Lord was shining around them, and suddenly they became very frightened. The angel said to them, ‘Don’t be afraid, because I am bringing you some good news. It will be a joy to all the people. Today your Saviour was born in David’s town. He is Christ, the Lord. This is how you will know Him: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’ – Slide 5

Then a very large group of angels from heaven joined the first angel. All the angels were praising God, saying: ‘Give glory to God in heaven, and on earth let there be peace to the people who please God.’ Then the angels left the shepherds and went back to heaven. The shepherds said to each other, ‘Let us go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened. We will see this thing the Lord told us about.’ – Slide 6

So, the shepherds went quickly and found Mary and Joseph. The shepherds saw the baby lying in a manger and told Mary and Joseph what the angels had said about baby Jesus. Everyone was amazed when they heard what the shepherds said to them. Then the shepherds went back to their sheep, praising God and thanking Him for everything that they had seen and heard. – Slide 7

Meanwhile, in the east, wise men noticed a new large bright star had appeared in the sky and knew that a new King had been born. They got their presents ready to give to the new-born King and travelled for a very long way following the star. – Slide 8

The star led them right to Bethlehem and the place where Mary and Joseph were staying. The wise men bowed down and worshipped Jesus. – Slide 9

Then they gave Jesus their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh before returning back home.
(In the additional resources for this story at www.freebibleimages.org is a free PDF containing a diorama of the background and characters in this story that you can print and get children to make.) – Slide 10
