Dishonest tax collectors and other notorious sinners often came to listen to Jesus’ sermons. This caused complaints from the Jewish religious leaders and the experts on Jewish law because Jesus was mixing with such despicable people—even eating with them! So, Jesus told everyone this story. – Slide 1

‘There once was a farmer that had 100 sheep and he cared for them all.’ – Slide 2

‘At the end of every day, he would count them into his sheep fold to make sure they were all there. But one evening, when he counted his sheep there were only 99. One of them was missing. What should he do? He knew that to be out of the sheep fold at night was dangerous with all the wild animals around.’ – Slide 3

‘The shepherd made sure the 99 sheep were safe and then set out to see if he could find the lost sheep. He looked everywhere but did not give up. Where could the lost sheep have wandered?’ – Slide 4

‘He searched high and low and would not give up. Then in the distance he heard what he though was the bleat of a very frightened sheep. The shepherd rush in that direction. He found the lost sheep shivering behind a rock. He was so happy to find it.’ – Slide 5

‘The kind shepherd gently picked up his lost sheep and put it on his shoulders. Then he carefully carried it back to the safety of the sheepfold.’ – Slide 6

‘The shepherd was so happy to have saved the life of his precious lost sheep. He called his friends and they all celebrated together.’ – Slide 7

Jesus then turned to those listening and said, ‘Well, in the same way, heaven will be happier over one lost sinner who returns to God than over ninety-nine others who haven’t strayed away!’ – Slide 8
