Joseph and Pharaoh's dreams

God helps Joseph to explain Pharaoh's dreams.
1
Let me tell you a wonderful and amazing story. – Slide 1
2
Many years ago, Pharaoh dreamed that he was standing by the river Nile when seven fat cows came up out of the water and grazed in the reeds. – Slide 2
3
Then seven thin cows came up after them and stood beside the fat cows at the edge of the Nile. The thin cows ate the seven fat cows. – Slide 3
4
Then Pharaoh woke up.
When Pharaoh fell asleep again, he had a second dream. – Slide 4
5
There were seven heads of grain growing on one stalk, healthy and good. Then, seven heads of grain, thin and burned by the east wind, sprouted up after them. The thin heads swallowed up the seven healthy heads. – Slide 5
6
Then Pharaoh woke up and realised it was a dream. In the morning, Pharaoh was troubled, so he called for all the priests and wise men of Egypt. – Slide 6
7
Pharaoh told them about his dreams, but sadly, no one at all could interpret them for him. – Slide 7
8
Then Pharaoh’s cupbearer said to him, ‘Today I must mention my failures. Pharaoh, you were so angry with me, and also with the chief baker, that you put the two of us in prison. While we were there we each had a dream.’ – Slide 8
9
A young Hebrew man was in prison together with us. We told him our dreams, and he interpreted the meaning of each of our dreams. And everything happened exactly as he said it would. – Slide 9
10
Then Pharaoh summoned the Hebrew slave called Joseph and said to him … – Slide 10
11
‘I have had two dreams, and there is no one in the land of Egypt who can interpret them. But I have heard that you may be able to interpret these dreams for me.’ – Slide 11
12
Joseph replied, ‘It is not within my power, but my God will speak through me concerning the welfare of Pharaoh.’ – Slide 12
13
‘No one could tell me their meaning,’ said Pharaoh. – Slide 13
14
Joseph continued ‘Both dreams of Pharaoh have the same meaning. God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do in Egypt.’ – Slide 14
15
‘The seven good cows and good heads of grain represent seven plentiful years. The seven lean and hungry cows and empty heads of grain represent seven years of famine. Egypt will have seven years of great abundance, followed by seven years of famine. The previous abundance will not be remembered because the famine that follows will be very severe.’ – Slide 15
16
‘Pharaoh, the dream was repeated to you because God will make all of this happen very, very soon. Pharaoh should look for a wise man to put in authority over all the land of Egypt. This man should collect produce from the land during the seven years of abundance. This food should be held in storage in preparation for the following seven years of famine. In this way, the people of Egypt will be able to survive.’ – Slide 16
17
This advice made sense to Pharaoh and all his officials.
Pharaoh asked, ‘Can we find a man just like Joseph, one in whom God’s spirit is present?’ – Slide 17
18
‘Joseph, because God has enabled you to know all of this, you will oversee my household, and all the people of Egypt will submit to your commands. Only I will be greater than you.’ – Slide 18
19
So, Pharaoh declared to Joseph, ‘I place you in authority over all the land of Egypt and its people. ‘Then Pharaoh took the ring from his own hand and put it on Joseph’s. He clothed Joseph with fine linen clothes and put a gold chain around his neck. Then he placed Joseph over all the land of Egypt. – Slide 19
20
During the seven years of bountiful harvests, Joseph collected all the excess food in the land of Egypt and stored it in the cities. Joseph stored up so much grain it was impossible to measure. – Slide 20
21
The seven years of abundance came to an end, and the seven years of famine began just as Joseph had said.
When the famine became severe, Joseph opened the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians. And then all the world came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph, because the famine was everywhere. – Slide 21
22
A prisoner who trusted in God had become the most powerful ruler in all of Egypt, second only to Pharaoh. – Slide 22
