1
Samuel, as a boy, served the Lord under the supervision of Eli, the high priest. In those days, a word from the Lord or a vision was rare. – Slide 1
2
Eli’s eyes had begun to fail so that he was unable to see well. One evening, Eli was lying down in his place, and the lamp of God had not yet been extinguished. – Slide 2
3
Samuel was also lying down and the ark of God was nearby.
The Lord called to Samuel, ‘Samuel!’ – Slide 3
4
‘Here I am,’ Samuel replied. – Slide 4
5
Then Samuel ran to the high priest Eli and said, ‘Here I am. Did you call me?’ – Slide 5
6
‘I did not call you, Eli replied. – Slide 6
7
‘Go back and lie down.’ – Slide 7
8
The Lord again called … – Slide 8
9
… ‘Samuel!’ – Slide 9
10
So, Samuel got up and went to Eli again. ‘Here I am. I believe you called me.’ – Slide 10
11
Eli muttered, ‘I, I didn’t call you. Now go, go back and lie down.’ – Slide 11
12
Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord. The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. – Slide 12
13
Then the Lord called Samuel a third time. – Slide 13
14
So Samuel got up and went to Eli. ‘Here I am, for surely you called me!’ – Slide 14
15
Then Eli, the high priest realised that it was the Lord who was calling the boy. – Slide 15
16
‘Samuel, go back and lie down. When you hear Him call you, you can simply say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”’ – Slide 16
17
So, Samuel went back and laid down in his place. – Slide 17
18
Then the Lord came and stood nearby, calling as He had previously done. ‘Samuel! Samuel! – Slide 18
19
Samuel replied, ‘Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.’ – Slide 19
20
God said, ‘Look! I am about to do something in Israel, when anyone hears about it, both of his ears will tingle. On that day I will carry out my judgment against Eli, everything that I have spoken about his house, from start to finish!’ – Slide 20
21
‘You should tell my servant Eli that I am about to judge his house forever because of their sin, the sin that he already knew about. For his sons cursed God, and Eli did not rebuke them. Therefore, I swore an oath to the house of Eli, the sin of the house of Eli can never be forgiven by sacrifice or by grain offering.’ – Slide 21
22
So, Samuel lay down until morning. Then he opened the doors of the Lord’s house. But Samuel was afraid to tell Eli about the vision he received from the Lord. – Slide 22
23
However, Eli called Samuel and said, ‘What message did the Lord speak to you, Samuel? Do not hide anything from me. God will judge you severely if you hide from me anything that the Lord has said to you. – Slide 23
24
So Samuel told Eli everything the Lord spoke concerning the house of Eli. Samuel did not hold anything back from him. Eli listened to all the words of Samuel and then in deep thought said, ‘The Lord will always do what He pleases.’ – Slide 24
25
Samuel continued to grow and serve in the temple, and the Lord was with him.
None of Samuel’s prophecies fell to the ground unfulfilled. All Israel, from the north to the south realized that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of the Lord. It was in Shiloh that the Lord revealed himself to Samuel through a vision. – Slide 25
26
The great prophet Samuel anointed Saul the very first king of Israel. And he anointed David to be King after Saul. – Slide 26
