Abraham's faith is tested

God provides the right sacrifice.

When Isaac was older, God tested Abraham to see how much he trusted in Him and His promises. God said, ‘Take your only son, Isaac, the son you love. Go to the land of Moriah. Then offer Isaac as a sacrifice offering. Do this on one of the mountains there that I will show you. <br/>Now God had promised that Abraham through his son Isaac would be the father of a great nation. What should Abraham do? He decided to obey God and trust Him. – Slide 1

Early in the morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took Isaac and two servants with him. – Slide 2

He cut the wood for the sacrifice. Then they went to the place God had told them to go. – Slide 3

On the third day Abraham looked up and saw Mount Moriah in the distance. He said to his servants, ‘Stay here with the donkey. My son and I will go over there and worship. Then we will come back to you.’  <br/>Abraham took the wood for the sacrifice and gave it to Isaac to carry. He then took the knife and the fire and they marched on together. – Slide 4

Isaac said to Abraham, ‘Father!’ <br/>Abraham answered, ‘Yes, my son.’ <br/>Isaac asked, ‘We have the fire and the wood. But where is the lamb we will burn as a sacrifice?’ <br/>Abraham believed that God would keep His promises and replied, ‘God will give us the lamb for the sacrifice, my son.’ – Slide 5

They came to Mount Moriah and Abraham built an altar. He laid the wood on it. Then he tied up his son Isaac and he laid him on the wood on the altar. – Slide 6

Then Abraham took his knife and was about to kill his son. <br/>But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven. ‘Abraham! Abraham! Don’t kill Isaac or hurt him in any way. Now I can see that you respect God. I see that you have not kept your son, your only son, from me.’ – Slide 7

Abraham looked up and saw a male sheep. Its horns were caught in a bush. So Abraham went and took the sheep and killed it. – Slide 8

He offered it as a whole burnt offering to God. Isaac was saved. So Abraham named that place ‘The Lord Gives’. Even today people say, ‘On the mountain of the Lord it will be given.’ – Slide 9

The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time. ‘The Lord says, “You did not keep back your son, your only son, from me. Because you did this, I promise I will bless you and give you many descendants. They will be as many as the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Through your descendants all the nations on the earth will be blessed. This is because you obeyed me.”’ – Slide 10

Then Abraham returned to his servants. They all travelled back to Beersheba, and Abraham stayed there. – Slide 11

Sarah lived to be 127 years old. When she died. Abraham was very sad and mourned for her. <br/>He bought land and a cave from the local Hittites to bury her in. – Slide 12

Abraham was now very old. He instructed his oldest and most loyal servant to go and find a wife for Isaac among his own relatives living a long way away in Northen Mesopotamia. ‘The Lord will guide you to the right person,’ Abraham told him. Abraham did not want Isaac to marry one of the local Canaanite women. <br/>The servant took ten of Abraham’s camels and left, carrying many beautiful and costly gifts. – Slide 13

He arrived at a well near to where Abraham’s bother Nahor lived. <br/>He prayed, ‘Lord, you are the God of my master Abraham. Allow me to find a wife for his son today. The girls from the city are coming out to get water. I will say to one of the girls, “Please put your jar down so I can drink.” If she then says, “Drink, and I will also give water to your camels,’ I will know she is the right person for Isaac. <br/>A pretty girl called Rebekah arrived at the well carrying her water jar on her shoulder. <br/>The servant ran to her and said, ‘Please give me a little water from your jar.’ – Slide 14

Rebekah said, ‘Drink, sir.  I will also pour some water for your camels.’  <br/>Once the camels had finished drinking the servant gave Rebekah a gold ring and two gold arm bracelets. He then went to her father who was a son of Abraham’s brother, Nahor and asked him if Rebekah would marry Isaac. <br/>After many discussions and the giving of gifts they asked Rebekah, ‘Do you want to go with this man now to meet Isaac?’ She said, ‘Yes.’ – Slide 15

Rebekah travelled south with Abraham’s servant to meet Isaac. Immediately Isaac fell in love with her and they got married. – Slide 16

Abraham lived to be 175 years old. He breathed his last breath and died at an old age. He had lived a long and satisfying life. His sons, Isaac and Ishmael, buried him in a cave east of Mamre where Sarah had been buried. <br/>Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac but gave gifts to all the sons of his other wives. – Slide 17
