After Adam and Eve were banished from the garden of Eden, Eve gave birth to a son. They named him Cain. She said, ‘I have had a boy with the Lord’s help.’ – Slide 1
2
Later Eve also gave birth to his brother Abel. – Slide 2
3
The two boys, Cain and Abel, grew up together. – Slide 3
4
Abel grew up to become a shepherd of flocks. – Slide 4
5
Cain farmed the ground growing crops and fruit. – Slide 5
6
Adam told his sons about the importance of making offerings to God. – Slide 6
7
Cain brought the Lord a gift of his farm produce. – Slide 7
8
Abel also presented an offering—some of the firstborn of his flock and their fatty cuts of meat. So it was a sacrifice where innocent blood was shed for the forgiveness of sin.
The Lord accepted Abel’s offering, but not the offering from Cain. – Slide 8
9
This made Cain both dejected and very angry, and his face grew dark with fury. ‘Why are you angry? the Lord asked him. ‘Why is your face so dark with rage? It can be bright with joy if you will do what you should! But if you refuse to obey, watch out. Sin is waiting to attack you, longing to destroy you. But you can conquer it!’ – Slide 9
10
One day Cain suggested to his brother, ‘Let’s go out into the fields.’ And while they were together there, Cain attacked his brother. – Slide 10
11
His anger and jealousy was so great that he lost control and killed Abel. – Slide 11
12
Afterwards the Lord asked Cain, ‘Where is your brother? Where is Abel?’
‘How should I know?’ Cain retorted. ‘Am I supposed to keep track of him wherever he goes?’ – Slide 12
13
But the Lord said, ‘Your brother’s blood calls to me from the ground. What have you done?’ You are now banished from this ground which you have defiled with your brother’s blood. No longer will it yield crops for you, even if you toil on it forever! From now on you will be a fugitive wandering from place to place.’ – Slide 13
14
Cain replied to the Lord, ‘My punishment is greater than I can bear. For you have banished me from my farm and from you. You have made me a fugitive and everyone who sees me will try to kill me.’
The Lord replied, ‘They won’t kill you, for I will give seven times your punishment to anyone who does.’ Then the Lord put an identifying mark on Cain as a warning not to kill him. – Slide 14
15
So, Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. – Slide 15
16
Cain’s wife conceived and gave him a baby son named Enoch. When Cain founded a city, he named it Enoch, after his son. – Slide 16
17
Another of Cain’s descendants was called Jabal. He became the first musician to make and play stringed instruments and pipes. – Slide 17
18
Jabal’s half-brother Tubal-Cain opened the first foundry forging tools of bronze and iron. – Slide 18
19
Having lost their son Abel, Adam and Eve had another son and named him Seth (meaning ‘Granted’); for, as Eve put it, ‘God has granted me another son for the one Cain killed.’ – Slide 19
20
When Seth grew up, he had a son and named him Enosh. It was during his lifetime that men first began to call on the name of the Lord. – Slide 20
21
Seth had a great-great grandson called Enoch.
Enoch was taken to heaven without dying, because God considered him righteous. – Slide 21
22
One of Seth’s later descendants was Noah and by that time the people on the earth had become very wicked. – Slide 22
