Jesus and His followers were on the way to Jerusalem but many were afraid. So Jesus took the 12 disciples to one side to explain what was about to happen. – Slide 1

‘We are going to Jerusalem,’ Jesus said. ‘I will be betrayed to the leading priests and teachers of the law who will say that I must die. They will hand me over to the Gentiles to mock, spit, mistreat and kill me. But on the third day after my death, I will rise to life again.’ – Slide 2

The disciples listened but did not grasp what Jesus was saying. – Slide 3

James and John came to Jesus. ‘Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask,’ they insisted. ‘What do you want Me to do for you?’ Jesus asked. – Slide 4

‘You will have glory in your kingdom,’ they said. ‘Let one of us sit at your right, and the other at your left, in the places of greatest honour.’ – Slide 5

‘You don’t know what you are asking!’ Jesus replied. ‘Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink? Are you able to be baptised with the baptism of suffering?’ – Slide 6

‘Yes we are,’ they insisted. ‘Then you will indeed drink from my bitter cup and be baptised with my baptism of suffering, Jesus told them. ‘But I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left. God has prepared those places for the ones He has chosen.’ – Slide 7

When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were furious. – Slide 8

So Jesus called them together and said, ‘You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. – Slide 9

‘But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant and whoever wants to be first among you must be last. – Slide 10

‘For I didn’t come to be served but to serve others and to give My life as a ransom for many.’ – Slide 11
