After David had defeated Goliath he became a national hero. People came from all around with harps and tambourines, dancing and singing, ‘King Saul has defeated thousands and David has defeated tens of thousands.’ – Slide 1

Now when King Saul heard this song it made him jealous. <br/>‘David is more popular than me. The people will soon want him as their King.’ <br/>He was in an evil, jealous mood. – Slide 2

David was invited to play his harp to King Saul. But as David was playing, Saul suddenly picked up his spear and hurled it at him. Saul’s spear just missed David. He threw the spear again and missed a second time. David became afraid of Saul and kept out of his way. Saul promoted David to become a commander in the army, hoping he would be killed in battle. But David won victory after victory and became a bigger hero than ever. – Slide 3

Saul told his son Jonathan to kill David. But Jonathan and David were good friends and Jonathan would only speak well of David. <br/>Saul then sent men to watch the house where David lived and kill him in the morning. <br/>Michal, David’s wife, warned him, ‘If you don’t run for your life tonight, tomorrow you’ll be killed.’ So Michal let David down through a window, and he fled and escaped.  <br/>Jonathan found David and asked what he could do to help. David asked him to find out what Saul was planning. They made a promise of friendship to look after each other and their families. – Slide 4

Jonathan returned to ask his father, ‘Why should David be put to death? What has he done?’ <br/>Saul picked up his spear and threw it in anger. Jonathan had no doubts that his father intended to kill David. – Slide 5

In the morning Jonathan went out to a field for a farewell meeting with David. Once David knew it was safe, he came out of hiding to meet him. Jonathan said, ‘Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other and our descendants in the name of the Lord. It was a sad parting. David left, and Jonathan went back to the palace. Their friendship lasted (and when David later became king he looked after Jonathan’s disabled son, Mephibosheth). – Slide 6
