The Jewish leaders were plotting to kill Jesus. Jesus had called them hypocrites. He healed people on their day of rest and He had raised Lazarus from the dead. They were alarmed that Jesus claimed to be the Son of God and that He was popular with many people.
Judas, one of the disciples, promised to tell them where they could arrest Jesus, if they paid him. They gave Judas 20 pieces of silver to betray Jesus. – Slide 1

Later that week, Jesus met with His disciples. He broke bread and told them this would remind them that His body would be broken. He shared red wine with them to remind them that His blood would be shed so they could be forgiven.
Jesus said that one of them would betray Him. Peter told everyone, ‘Others might run off and leave Jesus but I never will.’
Jesus replied, ‘Peter, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.’
Peter protested, ‘I will not deny you. I would rather die with you.’
All the disciples said the same.
By this time Judas had left to betray Jesus. – Slide 2

Jesus took the disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane and asked Peter, James and John to pray. Jesus prayed in great distress as He knew He was about to die and take the punishment for our sins. When He went back to the disciples they were fast asleep. He woke Peter and said, ‘Could you not pray with me for one hour?’
Jesus continued to pray but the disciples fell asleep once more.
Jesus prayed again and then woke up the disciples saying, ‘The time has come for me to be betrayed.’ – Slide 3

Just then, Judas arrived with the Jewish leaders and a great crowd armed with swords and clubs. Judas had agreed before to identify Jesus by greeting Him on the cheek with a kiss. Judas did this and Jesus said, ‘Judas, would you betray Me with a kiss?
Peter immediately drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
But Jesus said, ‘No more of this!’ And He touched the servant’s ear and healed him. – Slide 4

The disciples all ran off in fear. Jesus was taken to the High Priest, but Peter followed them in the distance along with another disciple.
Peter went into the court of the High Priest. The servant girl at the door said to Peter, Aren’t you one of Jesus’ disciples?’ Peter lied, ‘I am not.’
Peter joined a group warming themselves by the fire. ‘You’re one of Jesus’ disciples, aren’t you?’ they said.
Peter denied it and said, ‘I am not.’
One of relatives of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, ‘Didn’t I see you in the garden with Jesus?’ – Slide 5

Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed.
Jesus turned and looked at Peter. Peter remembered that Jesus had warned him, ‘Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.’
Peter went out and wept bitterly.
After Jesus rose from the dead, He met with Peter and asked him three times, ‘Peter, do you love Me?’
Each time, Peter replied that He did. Jesus told Peter to go and teach people of all ages the wonderful news that Jesus has made a way for us to be forgiven. – Slide 6
