During the years 760-755 BC, God called a sheep herder and sycamore fig farmer called Amos to be His spokesman to the wicked people of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. His task was to warn them of God’s coming judgement when the Assyrians would invade and take them as captives. This is one of God’s warning messages found in chapter 9 of Amos.
In a vision, Amos saw the Lord standing by the altar … – Slide 1

The Lord said, ‘Smash the tops of the pillars and shake the Temple … – Slide 2

‘… until the pillars crumble and the roof crashes down upon the people below. – Slide 3

‘Though they run, they will not escape my judgement. – Slide 4
5
‘No one will get away, no runaways will make it. – Slide 5
6
‘If they dig their way down into the underworld, I’ll find them and bring them up. – Slide 6
7
‘If they climb into the heavens, I will bring them down. – Slide 7
8
‘If they hide among the rocks at the top of Mount Carmel, I will search them out and capture them. – Slide 8
9
‘If they hide at the bottom of the ocean, I will send the sea serpent after them to bite and destroy them. – Slide 9

‘If they surrender and volunteer for exile, I will reach out for them. – Slide 10
11
‘I will see to it that they receive justice for their evil deeds. – Slide 11

‘The Lord Almighty touches the land and it melts, and all its people mourn. – Slide 12

‘Earth swells like the River Nile in flood; then the water subsides. – Slide 13

‘God builds His palace—towers soaring high in the skies, foundations set on the rock-firm earth. He calls ocean waters and they come, then He ladles them out on the earth. GOD, your God, does all this. – Slide 14

‘Do you Israelites think you’re any better than the far-off Ethiopians?
Am I not involved with all nations? Didn’t I bring Israel up from Egypt, the Philistines from Caphtor, the Arameans from Qir? – Slide 15
16
‘The eyes of the Lord God are watching Israel, that sinful nation, and I will root her up and scatter her across the world. Yet I have promised that this rooting out will not be permanent. – Slide 16
17
‘For I have commanded that Israel be sifted by the other nations as grain is sifted in a sieve, yet not one true kernel will be lost. But all these sinners who say, “God will not touch us,” will die by the sword. – Slide 17

‘Then, in the future I will rebuild the City of David, which is now lying in ruins, and return it to its former glory, and Israel will possess what is left of Edom and of all the nations that belong to me. For so the Lord, who plans it all, has said. I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel, and they will rebuild their ruined cities and live in them again; they will plant vineyards and gardens; they will eat their crops and drink their wine. I will firmly plant them there upon the land that I have given them; they shall not be pulled up again.’ – Slide 18
