Ephesus was famed for the Temple of Artemis  (completed around 550 BC), one of the seven wonders of the world. It had a theatre capable of holding 25,000 spectators. – Slide 7
Smyrna vied with Ephesus and Pergamum for the title ‘First City of Asia.’ Smyrna created a cult of Rome and worship of the goddess Roma. – Slide 8
Pergamum (or Pergamon) reached the height of its greatness under Roman Imperial rule and was home to about 200,000 inhabitants. It had a shrine and spa to Asclepius (the god of healing). – Slide 9
Thyatira was famous for its dyeing trade and guilds. It was a centre of the indigo/purple cloth trade and Lydia, whom Paul and Silas met in Philippi, was from this city. – Slide 10
Sardis was situated in the middle of the Hermus valley, at the foot of Mount Tmolus. It was destroyed by an earthquake in 17AD and rebuilt, funded by its own wealth. – Slide 11
Philadelphia suffered in the earthquake of AD 17 and was relieved of paying taxes by the Roman Emperor Tiberias as a result. It housed an Imperial cult. – Slide 12
Laodicea is situated on the long spur of a hill between the narrow valleys of the small rivers Asopus and Caprus and had a large Jewish population. There is evidence of the worship of Zeus, Apollo and the emperors. – Slide 13
