Jesus raises the widow's son

Jesus brings a widow's dead son back to life in Nain.

Jesus and His disciples traveled south to a village called Nain. In Hebrew, Nain means ‘green pastures’, ‘lovely’. Nain was 25 (40km) miles southwest of Capernaum. A young man and his widowed mother lived there. – Slide 1

In Bible times, when a woman became a widow she lost her husband who was the main provider for the family. Fortunately this woman was not alone. She had one son who would help take care of her. – Slide 2

Tragically, the son died. Now the widow was alone. Her life seemed empty and without hope. In a prophecy about Jesus it reads, ‘He will have compassion on the poor and needy. And the lives of the needy he will save.’ Psalm 72:13 – Slide 3

Jesus had performed many miracles and crowds were following Him. Word about Him had spread widely and many approached Him for healing. Jesus was on His way to the village of Nain. – Slide 4

As Jesus approaches the city gate, the widow mourning for her dead son was leaving the city. Her son was being carried out of the city for burial. Along with the funeral procession a large crowd was paying their respects. – Slide 5

Jesus was later described in this way. ‘Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort.’ 2 Corinthians 1:3. Jesus, the Son of God, went directly to the widow to comfort her. Then He performed a miracle. – Slide 6

With a crowd watching, Jesus stood by the dead man. Jesus touched the coffin then He spoke ‘Young man, I say to you, arise!’ God’s word is all powerful. Jesus used His word to bring life to the dead man. – Slide 7

God gives life to all. Jesus gave this man back to his mother. The crowds were shocked. They said, ‘God has visited His people!’ This is the first recorded miracle of Jesus raising the dead. – Slide 8

The news of Jesus raising the dead quickly spread throughout all of Judea and the surrounding district. Jesus went on to perform many more miracles. As a result more and more people went to see Him. – Slide 9
