After many appearances, Jesus ascends to heaven.

Most people believe it was Luke who wrote the book of Acts. It was a letter to his friend Theophilus. He writes, ‘In my first letter I told you about Jesus’ life and teachings and how he returned to heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions from the Holy Spirit.’ – Slide 1

After Jesus was crucified, He rose from the dead. – Slide 2

For 40 days He appeared from time to time to the apostles. – Slide 3

Jesus proved to them in many ways that it really was Him they were seeing and He was alive. – Slide 4

On these occasions He talked to them about the Kingdom of God. – Slide 5

During one of these meetings He told them not to leave Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit came upon them. This was to fulfil God’s promise, a matter He had previously discussed with them. – Slide 6

‘John baptised you with water,’ Jesus reminded them, ‘but you shall be baptised with the Holy Spirit in just a few days.’ – Slide 7

One day Jesus and His disciples travelled to the Mount of Olives, just outside Jerusalem. – Slide 8

They asked him, ‘Lord, are you going to free Israel from Rome now and restore us as an independent nation?’ – Slide 9

The Father sets those dates,’ Jesus replied, ‘and they are not for you to know.’ – Slide 10

But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power to testify about me with great effect, to the people in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth, about my death and resurrection.” – Slide 11

Soon afterwards, Jesus rose into the sky and disappeared into a cloud, leaving them staring after him. – Slide 12

As they were straining their eyes for another glimpse, suddenly two white-robed men were standing there among them. – Slide 13

‘Men of Galilee,’ they said,  ‘why are you standing here staring at the sky? Jesus has gone away to heaven, and some day, just as He went, He will return!’ – Slide 14

The disciples walked the short journey back to Jerusalem and held a prayer meeting in an upstairs room of the house where they were staying. – Slide 15

At the prayer meeting were Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon the zealot, Judas (son of James), and the brothers of Jesus. Several women, including Jesus’ mother, were also there. – Slide 16
