Jesus and Lazarus: Part 1

Jesus is told that Lazarus is ill but delays visiting him.

Now a friend of Jesus named Lazarus was ill. He was from Bethany, where He lived with his sisters Mary and Martha. – Slide 1

So the two sisters sent a messenger to Jesus who was staying on the other side of the River Jordan. – Slide 2

‘Lord, Lazarus is very ill,’ the messenger told Jesus. – Slide 3

On hearing this news Jesus said, ‘This illness will not end in death. It is for God’s glory so that God’s Sons may be glorified through it.’ – Slide 4

Now although Jesus loved Lazarus, Mary and Martha, He did not go immediately to see them. Instead He stayed where He was for another two days. Then He announced, ‘Let’s go back to Judea.’ – Slide 5

‘But Teacher,’ they protested, ‘A short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you. And yet you want to go back there? – Slide 6

‘Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him up,’ Jesus announced. His disciples replied, ‘Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.’ Jesus had been speaking of the death of Lazarus, but His disciples thought he meant natural sleep. – Slide 7

So Jesus told them plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead. I am glad I was not there for your sake so that you might believe. Let’s go to him.’ – Slide 8

Then Thomas said to the rest of the disciples, ‘Let’s go with Jesus that we may die with Him.’ – Slide 9

So they set off on the trip to Bethany where Lazarus lived. – Slide 10

It took them two days to get to Bethany where the mourners had gathered. – Slide 11
